The Heritage of Ellis Island Tropical Tea
My Great Grandfather Cyril Byron was a Garevyite- Jamaican immigrant who came to America in the early 1900's. Byron worked for the Black Star Line which Marcus Garvey started and became the Chief Chef. After working for the Black Star Line Byron work for Mahattan Hotels and many more ocean liners before he opened and founded Byron Caterers in 1940 of the Morrisania Area of Stebbins Avenue and 165th Street.
Byron Caterers became one of the Largest Black Family Owned Catering busineses of the Bronx until 1960 when it closed.
Before my great grandfather died, he gave the recipe to my father and told him, “this recipe is to be sold and not told,” therefore I made a promise to carry on the family legacy by bringing this tea to the market.
